Last Hash, The Berlin Marathon, Mells Scenic 7 etc...

Some great news in from Mike Harvey... Must note that one for next year, sounds good

Sam and I went to the Doone Run at Lynmouth in North Devon. As it was the 30th Anniversary of this race it was run in reverse and most people said it made a better though harder race.

Mainly cross country it comprises 10 miles and 2000ft of climbing with about 3 miles of manic downhill rocky trail running at the end. It is a long drive from Yeovil but the stunning views really made it worthwhile. A real Gem of a race.

Totally outclassed by hordes of proper Fell runners but ran probably better than I have run all year to hold onto 11th place in 1:22:38, which I was very pleased with. Sam, who had not run for over a year until 2 weeks ago and was carrying an extra stone of muscle after his body building completion, also finished in about 1:36 but will give you a completely opposite opinion of this race!!!

Glad to see you are back running again,
All the best,

Mike

Report for the blog from Captain Lesley:

Enjoyable but tough, hilly, Mells Scenic 7 this morning, mostly off road with tree-rooted muddy paths, through fields (mostly cornfields).

Flora was attacked by a nasty bramble and Leyton tripped and ended up with 2 fingers in a splint!

Despite this YTRRC did well yet again with prizes for:

Rose Harvey - 2nd Female finisher
Nick Brooke - 1st MV60
Lesley Nesbitt - 1st FV55
Bryn Phillips, Nick Brooke, Leyton Green and Rose Harvey - Mixed Team winners

Other Yeovil vests I saw were worn by Flora Brooke, Rod Appleby, Jon Crane, Simon Rowbottom and Adam Hawkins. Apologies if I have missed anyone.

When the results are up I'll update the club championship tables and add to the blog.

Thanks
Lesley

A letter received from by Phil from Richard Talbot a competitor in the recent King Alfred's Torment, he was 90th time 68min 10sec. His report is below!

King Alfred’s Torment

This 7 mile hill race immediately attracted me due to its location. Set just off the A303 on the Wiltshire/Dorset/Somerset borders the race runs through the grounds of the Stourhead estate on the outskirts of Mere.

The event is run by Yeovil Town running club and is advertised as 7 irish miles of hills and mud. Now I am not the type of runner who gets misty eyed at the beauty of certain races but straight away upon entering the estate one immediately gets the feel of the remoteness of the event.

The car park is roughly 600 yards from the start. You actually walk down a steep hill towards it. Already the butterflies start as i know the finish is in the car park so this will end up being an uphill run.

To accentuate this feeling further the first 400m of the run appear to be downhill on a country lane. Then we turn into the heart of the race. Across a variety of surfaces including trail, field and pure mud the course appears to head upwards for the next 3 and a half miles to King Alfred’s statute.

Now this race appears to have different scales of hill. 1. Normal hill and painful…….2. So steep that running the hill is fruitless……..3. long half mile non stop hill, just to finish you off. The journey up to the statute was really tough but it was a good feeling reaching the water station at 3.9 miles knowing that the course could not throw anything worse at you.

The next 2 miles were simply amazing. I appeared to hit a second wind as we navigated our way down a stunning trail. I didn’t realise how far we had climbed on the first half as the down hill seemed to go on forever. It was glorious running freely on a beautiful mild autumn day in fantastic surroundings (I’am not getting misty eyed).

All good things must come to an end and the last mile resorted back to normal as a couple more hills awaited for as we headed back into the car park and the finish line. A rock cake was presented to each finisher although  i must admit i was a little disappointed. We were promised a burnt cake yet mine was perfectly baked!!!!!

This is a gem of an event and once again i was surrounded by a variety of keen , motivated and friendly runners. At the end i was in my usual state of distress, in a sea of sweat trying to consume large volumes of water and pig down my cake. Choking and spluttering something next to my car made me laugh.

One of my fellow competitors Phil Monk of Dorset Doddlers who had  run a respectable time of 57.24 was cheerfully consuming a bottle of cider. How could any man do this after such a hard run? My respect for this legend (well in my eyes) was intensified when he had informed me that the previous evening he had been to a wedding  where he had consumed even more bottles of the apple rocket fuel.

In fact a large number of the Dorset Doddlers had congregated around Phil’s car and it was great to see the camaraderie that was so clearly in evidence amongst their club members. There were so many local clubs in evidence at the race with Frome, Chard, and Wells all being well represented.

Well done to Phil and everybody involved

Also from Phil

All Argentan adventurers meet at the Fleet Air Arm Museum opposite where the 5K races run from by 0430 at the latest. The coach must leave on time to catch the ferry.

DON'T FORGET YOUR PASSPORTS. Experience has taught us that if you can photocopy the face page. (Ask Jane Mills).

We usually travel very informally ie sports type gear which is also suitable for the pasta party on Friday evening. It is handy if you bring a small rucksack as once on the ferry you do not have access to the coach.

If you have any questions then please contact Phil on philmacquaid@hotmail.com
sooner rather than later.

Next Tuesdays run is from Goldenstones running the Winter Routes so as per club rules reflective clothing is required

To broaden the scope of Pub Runs we are looking for people to host a Pub Run. its quite easy:

You nominate the pub, fix it to order the meals before we start at 6.30 and have a route of about 6 miles. We do try to stay out of Yeovil so local villages are preferable.

Any questions talk to Phil or Pete

This in from Laura Coppard, fantastic result Laura, well done..

Really enjoyed Taunton 10k today. Got a new PB of 47:00, over a minute off my time!

Mark Gosney also got a PB

It was the last Ham Hill Hash today, a great time was had by all

Amazing time by Paul in the Berlin Marathon today, he sent this..

Marathon no 138 notched up this morning in Berlin and enjoyed a tour of the city in 3:03. Happy to be less than 1 hour slower than the new WR holder and 49 secs quicker than when I last ran it 6 years ago. Oktoberfest biers are calling.

That’s it for now, enjoy the week, see you at Goldenstones on Tuesday

Terry
