Hi, welcome to the first blog entry by Matt. Terry is away on his hols, basking in the sunshine in sunnier climes.
Firstly, apologies to all who should be mentioned here having done great things and I didn’t know about (eg. Sam Harvey completed the 44miles of Lizard to Land’s End).
Yesterday’s 30th anniversary celebrations were sadly poorly attended, but was still great fun for everyone who could make it. The Relay Rings Race was somewhat confusing and even having completed it Gary Pollard still didn’t know what team he was in! Unfortunately, I got beaten by a Gillingham Trotter guest runner (don’t tell anyone it was a girl too!), but the winning team was still Gareth “team organiser” Ashmead, Dave “track is my thing” Richardson, Nikki “I’m not very quick” Guiver, Richard “I’ve gone the wrong way” Dodge, and me! Well done to everyone else who took part. Moving on to the evening, there was loads of great food and a lot of fun at the Ceilidh (barn dancing), so well done to the committee team for organising that. I have to say the barn dancing is good training because I was knackered at the end!
Adam Hawkins has asked me to include the Ash Town race he organises. This is a picturesque run with a road and track type course, and I can recommend it. So here’s the advert...

BBQ, Refreshments and Licenced Bar!!!
We had a mass of Green and White at Thursday’s Forde Abbey race, and while one river crossing was cancelled, the other was deep and swift and more than made up for it, especially for those shorter members of the Club! Maintaining that theme please read the following as we would like another mass turn out of YTRRC at this event too...
Club Members needed!!! For the Parrett Trail Relay Race on Sunday 13th October 2012
This is the annual running of the River Parrett, from the sea near Bridgewater to the river’s source at Winyards Gap, just outside Misterton. The race is organised by Crewkerne running club and we like to show how much better we are!
YTRRC traditionally enter a number of teams ranging from quite good, to not so good. This is all a bit elitist, and following the success of other relays, we are trying an all-inclusive method. We will have elite Male/Female/Mixed teams, if enough “good” members enter. Other runners will be allocated teams that are deemed roughly “equal” so that those teams can battle out against each other in friendly competition.
The first point is... if you can complete the distance we have a place for you!
Secondly...everyone has a bit of fun and enjoys the event!
Here are the distances, start times, and routes that you run...
Leg 1 – 9.1 miles – (9:35am)Steart to Dunball Wharf
Leg 2 – 5.6 miles – (10:30am)... to Huntsworth
Leg 3 – 7.7 miles – (11:00am)...to Oath Lock
Leg 4 – 7.7 miles – (11:45am)...to Kingsbury Episcopi
Leg 5 – 9.5 miles – (12:30pm)...to Lower Stratton Wigborough
Leg 6 – 8.6 miles – (13:20pm)...to Winyards Gap
1. The start is called Steart, it’s not a spelling mistake.
2. Don’t worry about the routes, we will have route finding events beforehand.
3. The relay is NOT a baton relay. Times of each runner are recorded and added together rather than handing over the baton. Don’t think the first leg has to be run in 55 minutes!
4. We need SIX members per team, so please say YES! 2 or more females for mixed teams, 6xmen, 6xladies for Male/Female teams!
5. As a club event, the entry fee will be paid by YTRRC. The race provides a momento T-Shirt and goody bag.
Check out http://www.parrettrace.btck.co.uk/ for full details, or speak to anyone who has been in the club a while and they can advise (Deb Neal, Phil MacQuaid, Pete Jakeman, Matt Driver, Katie Pearce, Richard Dodge, Flora Brooke, Kat Jones, Lisa Gunning, etc.).
Please email your interest (you can include which leg you fancy) to runningmatt@mypostoffice.co.uk
I’m hoping Brian Mountjoy-Row had enough support to organise today’s (Sunday’s) Race for Life at Sherborne Castle. Mark Wills was hoping to lead the 1000 or so women, let’s hope he managed to stay ahead! Similar hopes to England later on this evening.
Upcoming events include Portland 10miles is on Sunday 1st July, TinTin 10K is coming up at Tintinhul on Thursday 4th of July, Durberville Dash 10k at Wool (Dorchester) on Sunday 22nd July, Maiden New”ten” Madness 10K on Saturday 11th August, Weymouth 10 miles on Saturday 20th October. Anyone looking for a Slam, Grand Slam or Ultra Slam hat might want to grab their chance for these distances. All great local races although I’ve not done Durberville before..
Otherwise, have a great week. I’ll see most of you Tuesday. There is no Pub Run on Thursday as we’re all at Adam’s race in Martock with food afterwards!
Cheers...Matt
