EA SW Championships & Inter Counties
2013
Just a quick reminder that the deadline is
fast approaching for entries to these Championships.
Closing date for entries
is Tuesday 30th July 2013 – 10pm. Please could you inform your club athletes.
This is to let you all know that the
EA SW Championships & Inter Counties 2013 will be delivered by South West Athletics Academy on behalf of
England Athletics.
As last year all athletes will need to enter themselves via
the South West Athletics Academy website. All the details about the
Championships are also on the website.
Please note that it is the athletes responsibility to
enter themselves and pay the entry fees. The format this year is to enter
as a club athlete and the first finisher (with county qualification) will count
automatically for their county. There will be no separate county entries this
year.
The next Committee Meeting is 4th September
unless an emergency meeting is required.
Angel has been doing the tour of Exeter, an 8km trail, a
10km and a 500mtr track, she came 2nd, 7 seconds behind the winner.
Great performance Jill

This is Matt in a Park, but not The London Parks! |
A friend of mine has links with this charity and asked if anyone wanted
this fantastic opportunity to do the London parks half marathon...an amazing
route, especially for all you country bumkins done here in sunny (?)
Somerset...
I think the minimum charity requirement is just £300, so not too bad for an event like this.
Have a look and see if you fancy it!!!
Royal Parks Half
Rob Jones posted this, you can contact rob on the Facebook page if you want
to work with him…
Hi, I am currently training for my first marathon in Bournemouth on October
6th. Fortunately most of my training options are covered by the activities of
our club which is a great help. Is anybody else running this race or similar
near that date? If so, would you like to team-up? Maybe our various training
paces are similar and this might help us to work together towards our goal.
Note: my training schedule is designed around me aiming for a 3:45 marathon
(8:30min/mile).
And just a bit from me with thanks to my Surgeon
That’s it for this week guys, I am hoping to be running again from 2 weeks
time, so you might see me with the beginners group from a few weeks time. Getting
fitness back on the bike, so as long as the pain goes totally, you will have to
put up with me again soon. Target a nice flat 10km and then The Stickler..
Everything else is on the web site at this link
Just a closing thought for those ultra people and others out there...
A good friend of mine is an excellent ultra athlete, he is also a coach. He has completed multiple Ironman events and 2 Ultra Man contests. He has also completed Race Across America and the Mozart 100. I will call him Mick.
Recently his coaching has taken him away from the level of training required to do these types of events, however he decided on Saturday to do the Davos 74, 74 miles in the mountains.
He was going ok when it all fell apart, he was pulled out by a marshall, had to have 2 hours of medical attention and was in severe pain..
He admits complete stupidity when wishful thinking surpressed the hard work, dedication and training required to complete these sort of miles. He is ok and with rest and proper training he will be back, but it could have been worse. If it can happen to Mick it can happen to anyone, he admits his stupidity, and I know he will not do it again.
His event was extreme, but make sure you take those simple steps, always let someone know where you are going, if going alone carry a phone, always be seen. And take advice on your training and events, we have some very experienced people in the club who are only to happy to help and advise. Use that experience, don't be afraid, they all love talking about running.
The moral of this, Never under estimate the requirements to meet your ambitions, I know I have a hard road back, starting with few gentle jogs on the grass. It does not matter if you are doing 10k or 100k, think about it, talk to people at the club, take advice from others, always listen to your body. If in doubt, stop, sometimes it takes more courage than carrying on. We do it to enjoy, so set your goals, do your training, take advice and go out there and have fun and experience the unbelievable level of satisfaction when you achieve your target and ambition.
And know that running is a safe and fantastic sport, like everything else, its about common sense!
Take care everyone and smile! See you soon.
Terry
