Big thank you to all that I've trained with this year leading up to NDVM today and for the messages of support. Massive thanks to Lynne and Anita for running with me today and keeping me going. Thanks to Pete too for great training advice and plan. Am very happy with today and really enjoyed the course!

Steve Warren who's legs asked him what he was doing about the 20 mile point but carried on to get a sub 4. Well done to both of you.

Lynne has just been told that Dover Harbour Double Marathon is back on.

Club Membership

The Committee would like to welcome the new addition to the Club, and congratulate Ed and Aimee on the arrival of Daniel Noah.

From Aimee:

So I know that there is a lot of other news going on with NDVM and Glastonbury amongst other races, but I thought it was about time to post on the club page. Ed Gibbs and I are proud to introduce you to the newest "green and white" member Daniel Noah Gibbs. He arrived on 23rd April and looks like he has runners legs already

Marathon Mike

Seems like Mike has gone back over the pond for  a bit and sent the following report:

SWEET HOME CHICAGO (A song by Robert Johnson and a nostalgic visit)
The Lakefront 50k    20.7 miles of hell!?

A little bit further north this time, and a bit colder too. Getting on the plane in Tampa it was 27 degrees, getting off in Chicago two and half hours later it was zero. Had planned a weekend to see some friends from my old running club from the time when Chicago was home. The weekend was supposed to be mild, so entered the 50k a few days before for nostalgic reasons, have already run it 5 times. Should have known better than to believe the weathermen, they have a saying in this city "if you don't like the weather at the moment, hang around for an hour". The forecast had changed for the worse so Friday pm was spent around the charity shops getting some warm running gear.

The run is on the bicycle path right next to Lake Michigan. The downtown skyscrapers are only few blocks away and form an imposing backdrop for the whole race. The 50k is made up of 3 out-and-backs of 16 and a bit k's, pretty much in a straight line running north/south. On the one hand it can be a bit boring, but it allows for plenty of feed stations, lots of support and regular sightings of other competitors which you often don't get in endurance events.

An inch of snow fell during Friday night, then the temp dropped, so it was ice scraping of the car and a tricky 40 minute drive to the start. A north wind was blowing in the 20’s (mph), the 2-metre waves on the LAKE (bigger than those on the ocean in Cornwall) were crashing into the rocky shore sending up huge plumes of spray across the path which froze into pretty patterns on the tree branches, but better seen in magazines. Within 2 or 3 minutes of getting out of the car I was shivering. Most competitors were well layered up and wearing ski masks. It was minus 5 at the start and didn’t warm up much. Running on the crumbly ice was difficult, but it was brutal going into the strong freezing cold wind, the gusts made it difficult to make any progress at all. On the second time going north I had sweated so much despite the bitterly cold winds that my gloves were wet through and icing, fingers too, and I was approaching exhaustion.

So, having experienced frostbite here in similar conditions a few years ago, I cashed in along with others at the end of lap 2 and found somewhere to thaw out. A disappointing outcome, probably inevitable without the proper gear, but we live to fight another day.

Mike K

Mike will hopefully be back for my 100th at Dorset Invader.
