It's a Double all the way from Kent
This weekend saw Lynne, Paul Allen, Paul Meadows, Peter Jakeman and I go to Kent for a Double Marathon. Day one was the AGM Marathon, 12.96 laps of Betteshanger Park Cycle Path. There were rumours that 3 bottles of Red were drunk the night before by one of us, but not sure who.
On the last lap, you took the Flag of Honour to show all that you were on your last lap.
Lynne and Paul; were not far behind, just round the bend in fact. Once finished it was goodie bag and Medal time.
After more wine, the next day saw the same 12.96 laps but slightly less wind, (apart from Paul Meadows bottom). It was also Paul Allens 50th Birthday so on the 26 day and 2nd month we ran 26.2 (26.9) miles. Same as yesterday you got a flag on the last lap followed by Medal and more chocolate. Lynne is now taking councilling after two days of running and listening to Paul Meadows but may write a book on Camping in Glasto.
This medal doubles as a bottle opener as well but did not help in to get the cork out of the Wine bottle.
Big congratulations to Paul Meadows on his first Double Marathon
Once we were all finished and back at the Hotel it was Champagne time for Pauls 50th birthday, followed by a dodgy Curry.
From Lynne:
Well, that was hard work! 12 loops around the Kent cycle track at Betteshanger country park. Miss judged the loops and was blasting round then discovered I had 2 more laps, hence I died towards the end. Thanks, Paul meadows for the company first and last laps, it's great fun, come on YTRRC ladies, a great way to have a great weekend and run a marathon with a long cut off.
Bournemouth 10 Miler
From Lesley:
A very bracing 10 miler for some at Bournemouth today. Well done Helen Nesbitt, Terry Byrne, Jon Crane, Joanne Crane and Catherine Thompson Hansford for braving very strong winds with some rain thrown in. A 3 mile walk along the prom and back was tough enough! Hopefully, my brother did a good job in the finish funnel. The full results can be seen here.
The Babcary 7.5 mile Road Race
Yay Babcary 7.5 miles all done. 1st Yeovil lady back was Nicky Guiver, 2nd lady Joanna Henley followed by Moi 3rd. 1st Yeovil male (I don't no his name sorry), with Steve lye 2nd, followed by Kevin Doherty 3rd. First time in a while I've felt the running spirit come back yay. Really enjoyed it, despite starting on a hill lol. It was a good route altho not helped at times by it blowing a hooley and slightly muddy in places. Chuffed with my time seeing as training has gone out the window a bit this month, due to 30th birthday celebrations well done all x
From Kev Doherty:
The Babcary 7.5 mile Road Race has been a long established event and was race number 3 in the Somerset series and also a club Championship event which saw 16 YTRRC members line up – Undulating on quiet lanes and roads, with some local village support – Weather was dry and mild ... but rather windy ... There was also a Cheerleading Contingent for YTRRC in the form of Trevor Strelley ( Photographer ), Alison Griffiths and Steve Warren.
( sorry if I missed others !! ).
Rather crowded on the start as we moved up the hill jostling for position for the first half mile – a few moving vehicle and tractors had to be negotiated on the narrow lanes – a mixture of uphill and down with drink station at about 4.5 miles, someone very kindly put a ‘’ 1,6** Yrds to finish’’ sign outside there house ... not sure if that was good or bad at the time !
last half mile was downhill and just what was needed as the wind probably added a minute or so to times. Darrell Sheen was first Yeovil runner to finish in 6th place. Nicki Guiver was first Lady home closing down on Matt ( He had tired legs from 10k Dark Knight Run Saturday ). Pretty good event which was enjoyed by all ... When it was over.
Well done to all YTRRC.
A "sprint" (is that the correct collective noun?) of YTRRC runners took part in the 7.5 mile run this morning. A nice course on quiet country lanes but a bit gusty at times. A p.b for me albeit by virtue of not racing this distance before! A shot glass engraved with the race name was the reward in lieu of a medal which has already been christened whilst watching the rugby!

Manasota Track Club 25k Trail Run
This is a small local event and takes place in Oscar Scherer State Park which is located near Venice on the west coast of Florida, about an hour drive south of “home”. All profits from the event benefit a charity in Peru, the Villa La Paz Foundation which provides food and medical care for destitute kids. Every year we have a few members from my “local” club go down to take part. The run is twice round a trail of just under 8 miles, (4 times if you do the optional 50k) some is in the open, and some under trees, so there’s a mix of sun and shade. It’s flat with a lot of single track which winds through palm trees and giant ferns with fairly dense undergrowth in places. There’s a fair amount of soft sand along some stretches too, which sometimes reminds you of those bad dreams where you can’t go forward. Water and electrolytes are available at 3 aid stations, also cola, biscuits, and miscellaneous snacks. There are no awards except for the outright male and female winners, so it’s very much a fundraising and fun event serving as a good training run. We all did, however, get a thick cream coloured hoodie which will come in handy for trips to the UK!
BRC runners before the start
|
The race started at 7:30, the sun shone the whole time and it was starting to get a bit hot on the stretches without shade. Everyone in our group ran their own race, one of our younger members came third overall which was good for the club. It’s an enjoyable event without any pressure and something different having the oddball distance of just over 15½ miles. I was 8 minutes quicker than last year, probably because I didn’t fall this time which I usually do for a pastime on trails, and finished in the top half of the field so came away happy. Two of our group finished their first 50k’s, the MTC made $3,000 for the Foundation, so it was a success all round. The organisers laid on sandwiches, biscuits, fruit, snacks and pop afterwards, we took our own alcohol. One of our guys had a birthday so at last we had CAKE……………….and Prosecco Lyndsay!

Dark Knights
Pots of Gold! With just six YTRRC Dark Knights attending the last Wild Night Run, it was always going to be difficult to make ourselves stand out against a reported 250 participants...Leigh Woods, Bristol meant fairly local for us and the well-oiled machine of the organisation got us there with perfect timing. Registration and briefing over, the countdown began. 99, 98, (it's ok)...3, 2, 1 and we sped off. Matthew Driver had a date with destiny so shot off with the leaders, only to see Nathan Gardiner up ahead! Darren Atyeo got a little blocked in and made for a steadier start with Rob Jones hot on his heels. A downhill start was a blessing as the field spread out and everyone realised we were set for a very dark, very muddy, and very wet race. Darren was soon struggling with loose laces but speed was needed. With a track 3 feet wide winding down through a tree lined course meant concentration was key, but then the course turned and uphill was shouted by each and every Marshall. A small loop came meant we came past the finish and completed a bigger loop before the 5K route turned off. Anita Farquhar Rufus sped home to rapturous applause and 3rd in her age group, with Liz Diamond having a great race too. Nathan had opted for 5K which was a wise move as he was First Overall! Meanwhile, Matt, Rob, and Darren were slipping and sliding down the Gorge where the river sparkled beautifully. It did mean that was the bottom of the hill, though...more ups and down, with muddier and muddier puddles before Matt sped home to claim his first ever individual age group win, with Darren and Rob chasing hard. The mud was thickly plastered to everyone's legs but a great night with 50% of us winning a prize😊 Matt was so pleased he polished his cranium to show off his halo later in the pub...

Great Western
Great Western 10k and 2k Fun Run is only 2 weeks away so time to get your entry forms in. As well as lots of runners we are also looking for 2 people to input the entries and results on the computer - please let me know if you are available and willing to help with this. We would also be grateful for a few people to help with on-the-day entries before and to help clear up after - you are then free to run as well! One other plea is for a few people to help set up on the Saturday morning. Again if you can help with any of this please let me know. Thanks Lesley
Marks Runs
Thanks to Frances, Kimberly, and Emily for this morning's long run from Goldenstones. The route included the Country Park out to Pen Mill. Then up St Michael's Avenue and down Stone Lane. We followed the lane to Ashington, and Limington, then through Yeovilton to the Camp. Podimore was included, then Bridgehampton. We took the 3rd right turning and ran to Chilton Cantelo. At the farm shop at Hinton we were able to refill our water bottles and carried on. We crossed over the A359 and turned right at Hummer. I was absolutely knacked going up the hill before Over Compton. The last leg was a slog for me going down Compton Road and back into Yeovil. I found some reserve energy for a last push through Nine Springs. I hope my next 20 miler is easier going.
DONYATT PUB RUN
It was a mostly newish route tonight for Simon's pub run from Donyatt. As usual, we ran down to the disused railway line but came off after a while to cross over the A358. We climbed up the lane to Crock Street where we were exposed to the cold wind. A right turn took us downwards and under the A303. The cold air and concrete bridge seemed very bleak. We continued upwards and into Horton. Two left forks and a loop back over a dry ford got us heading in the direction of Taunton. At a junction, we took a track on the left, and the strong smell indicated it was going to be muddy, which it was. At the end we went left and headed back running all the way through Broadway. Out the other end, it was dark and the stars were exceptionally bright. We went down Sugg's lane with my Baggy Trowsers flapping. We joined the A358 at Horton Cross and ran along the pavement all the way back to the pub. It was a fantastic 7 miles tonight.
