Hi all,
A different format this week as
Terry is off worshipping the sun this week (again!), so I’m filling in for him.
Unfortunately I don’t have information to hand as to what people have been
running so “Well Done!!” to all who raced, trained, or sat in the sun.
We have some thrilling events
coming up so I’ll tell you about those instead:
Hopefully
you have all enjoyed charging around the tracks and fields around Odcombe,
Montacute, Chinnock or wherever during the summer and hopefully you’ve all
enjoyed the freedom of getting a bit muddy like when you were a kid. Now is
your chance to extend the summer by getting involved in a couple of events. I’m
about to use the terms “race” and “cross country” but DON’T PANIC!
I know
there are probably around thirty YTRRC members who run for the chance of a
prize in races while the rest of us compete against ourselves, the clock,
fitness, weight, or a particular friendly rivalry. How do I know, because I’ve
never been placed as an individual in a race and these are the reasons why I
run. That means there are 200+ members running for these reasons, so now I want
those 200 to read on...
The
Wessex Cross Country League is a series of races four races over the winter.
There are individual competitions (age groups, etc.) but also team
competitions. In the past we have missed out on winning the team purely because
we didn’t have a fourth runner taking part in the last race! Last year YTRRC
Ladies, Men, and Vet Men all won the team competition and we hope to continue
in this vein.
Ladies
compete over distances of between 5K to 7K, while us chaps compete at 8K to
10K. The route is usually laps, with the men doing one extra lap for the extra
distance. This means runners get to see how the race develops, they don’t get
lost and are well encouraged by other runners.
Sunday 30
September
Canford Heath Middle School, Wimborne
Sunday 21 October Ham Hill, Yeovil
Sunday 25 November Hudsons Field, Salisbury
Sunday 16 December Kingston Lacy, Wimborne
Sunday 21 October Ham Hill, Yeovil
Sunday 25 November Hudsons Field, Salisbury
Sunday 16 December Kingston Lacy, Wimborne
The
important thing to note is that it is a very low-key event and an excellent way
to begin your racing career. Many of us who have taken part have found it great
fun and gives a different dimension to running. It is not for “elite runners”
To enter,
please contact Tim Hawkins e-mail address at ( runnerhasbeen@yahoo.co.uk), or tell
Matt Driver at the club night this coming week. Names are required urgently as
the first race is Sept 30th.
We
normally meet at YTFC and share driving to venues and the club will pay the
race entry fees. Races usually start around mid-day as they are not long. More
details can be found on http://www.teamdorsetathletics.co.uk/ including details for younger
runners, eg. if you’ve got kids, bring them along to take part in age-races
too!
Parrett Trail (Sat 13th
October)
We have had a
storming response to the Parrett Trail Relay Race and have entered SEVEN teams
this year! The teams are as follows...if you are not listed but want to run,
let Matt Driver know and he will put you on the reserve list. We particularly
need a 50+ Lady reserve. If enough new people come forward, we may even be able
to enter an eighth team...
If you are listed
above, please contact the team person in red for details about which leg you
are running.

Parrett Trail reconnoitring
(reccying) of routes
In order to check
out some of the runs, Matt Driver will be available on Saturday 15th,
Sunday 16th of September, then again 6th October and 7th
October. Please contact him if you want help checking the route and we can sort
out who needs what and how we will arrange transport.
Super Slam, Grand Slam, Mini Slam
Hats
During the year between YTRRC Annual Awards Dinners, if you
have completed 5K, 5 miles, 10K, 10 miles, and Half Marathon races you have
achieved the Mini Slam. Those completing 5K, 10K, 10 miles, ½ and full
marathons achieve the Grand Slam, and those who additionally complete an
Ultra-distance as well as the Grand Slam are upgraded to Super Slam.
If this includes you, please forward your name and the race
details to Lee Holloway at hollowaylr@gmail.com or Nigel Moysey at nigel@foxholehouse.co.uk to claim
your Award Hat as soon as possible, or when as soon as you complete the
required set. If you do not claim, you will NOT be awarded a hat!
Next week’s YTRRC events
Sunday
9:00am - Long run groups from Montacute – Paul Allen is leading a 14-15
mile run and Deb Neal has a 7 mile run. Reading facebook, I think there is also
a 10 mile option. Bring along a bottle of water for when you are running, tea
& cake supplies to share for afterwards if you like. Meet in the overflow
car-park at Montacute House.
Tuesday
6:30pm - Club run
as usual, off towards Odcombe, Montacute and Ham Hill. Please try to select a
group that is suitable for your distance and pace as sometimes large groups can
be difficult to manage if there is only one Run Leader. If you want to
volunteer to help guide groups, please talk with Phil MacQuaid or Matt Driver.
The groups that should hopefully be on offer IF we can get Run Leaders will be:
Beginners
/ Those returning to running – distance agreed on the night
4
mile option – this group stops regularly to regroup
5
mile option – this group stops regularly to regroup
6.4
mile option – this group stops regularly to regroup
7.5
mile option – this group stops regularly to regroup
6.4
mile Tempo – Faster and less re-grouping (approx 9:00 minute miles)
7.5
mile Tempo – Faster and less re-grouping (approx 8:00 to 8:30 minute miles)
Wednesday
6:00pm to 6:45pm - It's the last of the Summer Series Yeovilton 5k this
Wednesday. Please come along and support your club by offering us assistance
with race set up, marshalling and general help (i.e. car parking).
Marshalling essentially involves the wearing of a fluorescent club jacket (provided) and standing for 1/2 an hour in pairs or a trio in a safe, yet prominent place on the road course, to warn (but not stop traffic) and protect racers; whilst offering plenty of hand clapping and encouragement to keep runners going and to watch some quality racing.
It would be very encouraging to see some new faces, so please don't be nervous, you'll be paired with an 'old' hand to show and explain exactly what happens behind the scenes.

Turn up on the evening any time between 6pm and 6:45pm to be given a
useful and worthwhile job.
Thursday
6:30pm
- “Pub Run” is this week from the Fortune Palace Chinese Restaurant, on the A30
dual carriageway between Yeovil and Sherborne. Not quite a pub but you can
still get a beer! Everyone to meet for 6:30 and we’ll run 5-6 miles before
eating at the restaurant. Non-runners welcome to eat only (my wife will be
there only for the food), and non-eaters welcome too!
Great
food, as we usually get them to bring us selection plates and everyone digs in.
Last time I went home absolutely stuffed!
Friday
6:30pm - Track session at the Yeovil running track on
Mudford Rec. Fantastic, friendly sessions to improve YOUR running and less
boring/different than just pounding the pavement.
Upcoming
Events
Parrett Trail – 13th October
Wessex Cross Country League – 30th September
YTRRC Annual Awards Dinner – 30th November
YTRRC 80 mile run to Swindon – Weekend of 17th
November
Great stuff Nigel, thanks. Terry
