HALLOWE'EN HASH - This Sunday, 28th October, 11am Picketty Witch, Ilchester Road, Yeovil
If you fancy a run on Sunday morning and have nothing planned, why not have a go at a Hash run? Members of the Club will be meeting at the Picketty Witch on Ilchester Road, Yeovil at 11am (so time to get there after the long run...) for a social run of 4ish miles. It's all inclusive - the fast ones can go off at pace and find the false trails (they're bound to go worng!) and the main pack run at the pace of the slowest - you may be at the back one minute and then find yourself at the front when everyone else goes the wrong way!
Hashing is easy, and is good fun. A trail is laid out by "hares" in dots of flour at irregular intervals to show the way. Find a dot and shout “on one” (the shouting is important, to let the other runners know what’s happening!); find a second, and it’s “on two”; find a third and it’s “on on” – you have the right trail! However, often you’ll find a cross, which is a false trail and you have to make your way back to the pack.
If you find a circle, then that’s a "check" and the trail effectively starts again – starting looking for "on one" again – but if you find a circle with a cross in it, then that’s "check back"; you’re on the right course but you’ve run past a turning off to the right or left. Be very careful ‘because those hares are sneaky!
There are "regroups" (circle containing an R) but the ones you really want to look out for are the circles with JB or B in them – that’s for the jelly babies or beer!! Another hash favourite is “on inn” – which means you’ve reached the end of the hash and you’re heading back to the pub!
Hash names are awarded (never chosen!) and amongst the Ham Hill Hashers you’ll find Mixy, Midflow, Grotbags and Dumbledore, as well as Fossil, Hands On and Sanatogen – you’ll have to come along and ask (nicely) the stories behind the names.
As a Hallowe'en special, fancy dress is being actively encouraged for the run - Martin has indicated that he'll be dressing up even if no-one else does!
If you're interested or want some more information before turning up (dressed as a witch!), do contact Martin "Mixy" Chaffey on martinchaffey@hotmail.co.uk or by telephoning on 07929 054576.
