As I said in the last post there was discussion at the Committee Meeting as to how the Club could encourage running performance and training. Paul has sent the following:
I suggested that the Club has a number of 'mentors' for various distances. I believe that Tim Hawkins will take on the mentoring of the shorter distances (up to and including half marathon) and I will take on the marathon role.
Some of you will be aware that I have already been leading a longer Sunday run to help with marathon training and have assisted with providing marathon training schedules. I will take suggestions as to how this role may evolve and what people would find most helpful. I'm happy to help with all aspects of marathon training (e.g. training, mental, hydration, race strategies, pacing etc). Please if you would like assistance just ask.
As Debs has indicated, the Sunday longer runs will be adjusted to help those on a dedicated marathon training programme to achieve the essential LR training. There will still be longer and shorter options but please try to help yourselves. Organise into groups and train together - it is much easier this way (just make sure you train at the correct pace for you).
The Club is here to help you achieve your running goals, whether these be over 5k or 26.2 miles. Please use the experience and expertise and feedback what you would like to see. I'm sure Tim will be in touch with his thoughts for all you fast twitch speed kings out there.
Training Thought from Paul - "I always loved running … it was something you could do by yourself, and under your own power. You could go in any direction, fast or slow as you wanted, fighting the wind if you felt like it, seeking out new sights just on the strength of your feet and the courage of your lungs.” Jesse Owens
And so to some training specifics and support - First from Sally -
On Tuesday myself and Fiona will be leading a non stop slow run (Tempo) for people that would like to step up their training ready for the Yeovil Half.
This will help encourage the new and slower pace runner, we will be starting at 4 miles and working up to around 8 miles dependent on how things go. Anyone is welcome to join us, we will be working together and running as a group, so may not be suitable for the faster runner or anyone that doesn't believe they cannot run the distance without stopping. So be there and prepare for those longer runs, you can do it!
Plan for Sunday long runs for next few weeks - shorter options for those training for a half, longer option for the marathoners -
Sally will be taking those aiming for a 4 hour marathon,
I will take those slower than this (10 - 11 minute mile pace).
Paul will usually run about 8 minute mile pace or faster
I will do a map / route list so that if a group want to turn up and run together at a different pace they will have a route to run. The only change to this may be if THEY decide to charge for parking at Goldenstones on a Sunday 6th Jan - Sherborne
13th Jan - 9am Goldenstones - 8 and 11 mile options
20th Jan - 9am Goldenstones - 9 and 12 mile options
27th Jan - 9am Goldenstones - 10 and 13 mile options
3rd Feb - 9am Montacute - 11 and 14 mile options (or Blackmore half)
10th Feb - Inca trail - 7 mile club race
17th Feb - 9am Goldenstones - 12 and 16 mile options

10th March - Great Western 10k club race
17th March - 9am Goldenstones - 10 and 20 mile options (Swindon relay the day before)
24th March - Yeovil half marathon

Debbie also said - I'm in. I've got a place for the black RAT on August 17th - yee hah - this year I'm going to be fitter for this tough event. Anyone else got a place? Let her know.
Just to mention that I will be doing another challenge for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in the spring - Called '3 in 3'
Three Marathons in 3 weeks, London, Stratford and North Dorset Villages, because I can, madness! Leslie and Paul are doing two of them, anyone fancy doing all three with me (I may need carrying at NDV)?
