2013 Mendip Challenge - report
from Richard Blackmore
On Sunday 2 June I ran in support of Becky Milton-Lee in her
attempt to run the Weston Mercury Mendip Challenge, a charity event for
both walkers and runners that is held annually to raise funds for the
Weston-Super-Mare hospice.
The event starts near the cathedral in Wells and finishes at the
hospice in Weston and roughly follows the route of the West Mendip Way.
The basic distance is 30 miles but because there are many lengths of the route
that are not marked and I admit due to my poor navigation and my mistake
of adding in an optional large hill just after the start we probably ran
between 31 and 32 miles.....it certainly made Mr Allen's 15 mile Sunday morning
jaunts feel like a walk in the park!
Becky flew in from Spain for the event and we joined the bus
in Weston at 6.45AM! to be taken to Wells and the run started at just before
8.00am. Thankfully the weather was fantastic and all the views were
outstanding... I mean absolutely stunning.
The route was mainly off road and went up and down what must be
some of the longest and steepest hills on the Mendips. This event is
definitely not one for the faint hearted! Having competed in the Challenge
before Becky made it clear at the start that the aim was to walk up the
steepest of the hills to conserve energy, this turned out to be a very sensible
plan! Fortunately Becky's parents also appeared at regular intervals
en-route to both give their support and provide very much needed and
appreciated sustenance.
We finished well in 8th position overall in about 5hrs 50mins ( its
not meant to be a race and is not officially timed ) out of a field of I
think a few thousand - including walkers - and Becky ran
brilliantly to finish as first lady! - about 20 minutes in front of the
second placed lady from Weston AC. Having taken part and now knowing the
route I am sure a much faster time could easily be achieved .... so if any
members fancy the challenge next year!
Becky flew back again to Spain a couple of days later - How
these internationals live!!
AVR
"unofficial event" on the 22nd June is "Keeping the Dream
Alive" - this replaces the Midsummer Dream which took place quite
happily for many years until the dreaded Health and Safety put a stop to it.
The run (it's not a race) starts at 12.17pm at the Hook and Parrot in
Seaton and is about 17 miles, I think, with plentiful refreshment breaks along
the way. It's much more fun run as a group and there is absolutely no pressure
to be fast, it's a social event.
I have received an e-mail from Lisa Sweeting,
organiser of the Race for Life in Sherborne that the Club will be helping at;
the race takes place on Sunday 23rd June but at the moment there are
only 4 marshals signed up on her list.
Sign up is to marshall or help is via Race For Life online application closes 10 days
before the event. (13th June)

Just a quick update saying we still have some outstanding
debtors. Once full payment has been received I will then release a code which
basically means you bypass the payment screen on the Bristol Half Marathon
online entry form.
I would like to thank you for your patience and further
instructions will be released in due course.

Hello, I was wondering if you would be able to publicise our
running event to your members? It’s a great run through the Wylye Valley,
raising funds for Great Wishford Primary School and the Trussell Trust
Salisbury Food Bank. Details can be found at greatwishfordrun
