Somerset Level 100 Miles

Katie's Christmas Club Walkathong

After years of planning, route finding including air recce and various walkthroughs the final day arrived on the 29th Dec 2014 at 1:00 pm. The Clubs annual Christmas Walk was happening and the Sun was out and not a cloud in sight. The cars started to arrive and even a park and ride was arranged just in case we ran out of room.

The meeting place was to the East of the Town in a tent with lights all around. People came dressed ready for a mighty walk through the Somerset Levels with boots, gloves, hats and winter coats. Some just didn't bother and came straight from the Land of Neo's.

The Walkers

The time to start arrived and we sent off on our epic journey to find large Balls in the bushes where treasure was sure to be found.

Those that found them then searched for the treasure.

The temperature started to drop as the miles and miles and miles of walking continued along dark wet rivers covered in ice, so we sent the kids first to check the depth and to see if the ice would hold.

We carried on and soon the tens of miles turned to more and more and we needed water as some started to fade and needed energy to continue. We came across a Frozen Lake and decided to make Camp.

Some needed rest

First the Wine and then the Whiskey

We made the Children walk the frozen Lake
After a few days rest we continued our trek along a narrow road and then turned into the wilds of Somerset

The Sun soon began to disappear and we were hoping that someone would have a head torch. With such a large Suitcase there must be one in there.

Sadly there was no head torch.
There was despair, with no light how would we get back. We continued up a great hill to see if we could find our way.

Then we came across a road and the dogs could smell mince pies and mulled wine ahead and we followed them back to tent and soon a fire was made and Christmas Cheer returned. We had made it

A big thank you to Katie and her kids for all the work they put in to arrange todays walk and to all those that turned up to make it a lovely day. All the Photographs that I took can be seen here.
