Babcary Road Race
A Championship race today at Babcary so loads of Green and Whites entered the race. A very good turnout and some great running. The results can be seen here.
From Lesley:
I do wish Paul Meadows would look the right way..it is confusing |
Lesley Nesbitt won a bottle of wine and now needs a bigger seller to put them all in.
Marathon Mike
Something
different again this week (for me that is)
With nothing else race wise on the docket
for this weekend, we trawled the local clubs’ calendars and Saturday saw us
bright and early in Lakewood Ranch just outside Sarasota for a last-minute
entry into a shorter than usual run (for me). Now, this is Ranch in name only,
no sign of horses, cattle, cowboys or Wyatt Earp look-alikes, the name is just
part of the pretense of trying to make newly built suburban areas of
featureless houses and chain retailers seem a little countrified. The event was
a 5k with proceeds going to two
local charities, a young lad with duchenne disease, and an animal shelter run
by volunteers.
Aside from it being for good causes it was
also an opportunity for me to nail a 5k for this year's hat. I missed out on a super-slam hat in 2015 by neglecting
to do a 5k, no planning and plain forgetfulness.
Yesterday’s
run was a single loop along wide sweeping modern parkways which threaded
through a modern industrial estate, quite pleasant though and traffic-free.
There were 2 groups, those running alone and those running with dogs! I ran a
mile to warm up, and after the national anthem we lined up for the start at
7:30 am. Here was the usual predominance of younger participants who weigh in
around 100 pounds (7 stones) wet-through, are really just a heart and lungs on
legs and disappear into the distance before the first corner. I was with the
also-rans, the more mature end of the field with the slightly oversize
waistlines, and just in front of the dogs. This was probably my 4th
or 5th 5k ever, they’re not really my scene, but it is a challenge
to go out and blast round as fast as possible and I’m sure there could be some
benefit to my longer distance plodding if I did more. Well, I ran most of it
with a 22 year old young lady who was coming back from an injury and hence
taking it easy. She kept me going but I was too breathless during the race to respond
to her questions or turn on any charm, and had to make that right at the end. Only
had one runner with a dog pass me, finished in a whisker over 25 mins, and walked
off with the Senior Grandmaster award, maybe I’ve found my event.
So the race was all over before 8am, really
fancied another 23.1 miles, but there was as much as you wanted free beer and
food, which was a much better option. We were on our 2nd pint by
8:15 am but NO TEA & CAKE again.
Yeovil Dark Nights
The final Night run in this series saw a Half and a 10k and the Yeovil Dark Nights went down to Devon.
This in from Katie:
Lovely but VERY hilly route, rather posh venue, a few pints and a prize for the speedy Mr Howes. Some of us collected an extra large medal for completing the series.
Brilliant evening out but exhausting, with a few nutters ready to take on Babcary smile emoticon
Well done all.
Bristol Half Marathon
From Anita:
BRISTOL HALF MARATHON
Sunday 25th September
This is now being 'run' by the 'Great Run' company.
As a club we can get a discount on places again smile emoticon
As a first claim club member we will only pay £30.40p each (rather than the £38+) But we need 20 places entered to qualify for this.
Over the last few years the club has had 40-50 members running in this event. It's a great race for PBs, first time half marathoners and a great club trip.
Please let me know if you are interested in coming along and I will organise the payments and 'vouchers' to enter

Bournemouth 10m
We had a few Green and Whites down in Bournemouth for todays 10 mile race.
The results can be seen here, a few pb's, so well done all.
Pub Run
Last Thursday saw Adams Pub run at The King William, the nice thing about this is you get to cook your own stake and the Landlady is just so friendly and even kept the Christmas Decorations up for us. It was a great route as well.
Kids Cross Country
Once again Adam is organising the School's Kids Cross Country on Tuesday and needs helpers. Anyone free on Tuesday afternoon who could help out Adam Hawkins at the Primary schools cross country races at the Yeovil Showground. Setting up starting 1400 hopefully ll over by just after 4pm
Sport Relief
Sunday 20th March see the Sport Relief Mile at Yeovil Recreation Centre, the poster can be seen here.
The Great Western
We
are now only 1 week away from the above race which is hosted jointly by YTRRC
and the Rotary Club of Sherborne, raising funds for local charities.
Now
in its sixth year this scenic multi-terrain route starts and finishes at
Leweston School, Sherborne, DT9 6EN and takes in Lillington and Knighton and
passes through farmyards, wood and orchards.
So
please support your Club and get your entry forms in as soon as possible. You
will find an entry form on the YTRRC website - http://www.yeoviltownrrc.com/2016-Docs/Great_Western_10k_2016.pdf
.
The
Rotary Club provide the marshals, so lots of YTRRC runners can take part.
Although, we would be grateful for a few people to help out ‘at base’ on the
day, ie taking entries, setting up the finish line and helping on the finish
line as the runners come in; also setting up and manning the ‘cafĂ©’. On that
note we would be extremely grateful if you could supply cakes etc. Mel & I
are making a few savoury things too as sometimes runners prefer savoury to
sweet after running! So any contributions of sweet or savoury would be very
much appreciated.
Katie
has kindly offered to be the ‘sweeper’ but it would be useful to have a second
‘sweeper’ to help out so if anyone would like to join Katie it would be much
appreciated.
We
are setting up on Saturday 5th March at 10 am. Again we would be very grateful
for help with that as the more people that come along the quicker we can
finish. Meet at Leweston School at 10 am or if you would like a lift please
contact myself or Phil.
You
can let me have your entries/money on a Tuesday evening or anytime else you see
me! Please let me know if you are able to help or supply cakes etc too please.
Either FB message or lesley.218@hotmail.co.uk
Many
thanks for taking time to read all this and, hopefully, supporting the event,
either by running or helping.
Lesley
